AI Night Desk for US Towing Yards

A night tow that nobody answers is gone. AAA's roadside guide cites J.D. Power's figure of about $109 for an average US tow, and seven of those jobs are about $763 before the yard pays fuel and the driver. A scripted AI night desk priced at $697 a month is built to catch the calls the owner misses while already on a hook, without letting software send a truck on its own.

You can build that desk in the yard's own Twilio account, or you can hire the voice layer. Michael Heredia deploys owner-owned phone, Telegram, Discord, and Slack agents that run on the buyer's server with the buyer's keys. Phone receptionist deployments on his site start around $8,000. The $697 product below is the narrower build: scripted intake, a driver text, and a human yes before anyone rolls.

Who buys a towing night desk?

The buyer is the owner of an independent US towing company with about two to eight trucks. They already have a local number, a rotation or motor-club contract, and an on-call driver. They lose cash when that driver is under a car and the shop phone rings out. They are not a national fleet, and they are not looking for a chatbot on a website.

What you sell

Sell a night intake desk, not "an AI receptionist." The desk answers overflow and after-hours calls, reads a recording notice, collects cross street, vehicle, problem type, and callback number, then texts the on-call driver. The driver replies YES plus a minute estimate, or NO. Only a YES triggers a confirmation text to the motorist. Impound, police, cash-only, and out-of-radius calls stop at a human cell.

Who is not the buyer

Skip motor clubs that already run a national dispatch center, city impound contracts with a required radio protocol, and any yard that will not put the Twilio account and the 10DLC brand in the company's own name. You want a buyer who can forward unanswered calls from the shop line, name one on-call phone, and review a morning exception log.

What does the stack cost to run?

As of September 2026, run the live call on Twilio and keep the language model off the audio path. Twilio's US voice page lists inbound calls to a local number at $0.0085 per minute plus $1.15 per month for the number. Call recording is $0.0025 per minute, and recording storage is $0.0005 per minute per month. Gather speech recognition with Deepgram Nova or Google v2 is $0.025 per use. Outbound SMS on a US long code starts at $0.0083 per segment, and carrier fees sit on top. AT&T's published long-code SMS fee on that page is $0.0035 per segment outbound and inbound.

Do not put a free-form voice agent on night one. Twilio Conversation Relay is $0.07 per minute on the same page, and Deepgram's Voice Agent API standard tier is $0.075 per minute of websocket time. Both are real products. Both are the wrong default when a bad address sends a rollback.

Token math, so the model line stays honest

Eighty tickets at 1,500 input tokens and 400 output tokens are 120,000 input tokens and 32,000 output tokens. At gpt-4.1-mini rates that is $0.048 of input and $0.051 of output, about $0.10. Deepgram pre-recorded Nova-3 Monolingual, if you transcribe a full recording instead of using Gather, is $0.0043 per minute, or about $1.38 for 320 minutes. Use that path only when the scripted prompts fail on noisy highway audio. It is still cheaper than Twilio's $0.0500 per minute standard recording transcription.

How do you price the $697 retainer?

Charge $400 to install and $697 a month for up to 80 answered night calls, nights defined as the hours the owner writes into the script, often 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. local. Extra answered calls are $6 each. The yard pays Twilio, OpenAI, and the droplet or n8n plan in its own accounts. You are selling configuration, the script, weekly listening, and the morning exception review.

Seven missed tows at the roughly $109 average are about $763 of gross towing revenue. That comparison is a ceiling, not a promise. Some callers are price shopping, some are outside the radius, and the yard still has truck cost on every YES. Say that out loud in the proposal. The retainer is priced off your time and the cost of a missed job, not off a made-up close rate.

What stays on your invoice

Your invoice is the setup and the retainer. Their invoice from Twilio is minutes, numbers, recordings, and SMS. Mixing those in one flat fee looks simpler and then a hailstorm week wipes the margin. Cap the retainer at 80 answered calls so you can see the overage before you feel it.

US citizens still owe US tax on this income while living abroad. The IRS self-employment tax rate is 15.3 percent (12.4 percent Social Security and 2.9 percent Medicare), and you generally file Schedule SE if net self-employment earnings are $400 or more. Build the call as a short TwiML tree, then let n8n do the paperwork. The model never decides that a truck rolls.

A usable classification prompt is short. Paste the four transcripts and the yard's radius in miles. Instruct the model to return JSON only, with keys label, cross_street, callback, and escalate. Set escalate to true for police, impound, injury, a place outside the radius, or any missing callback. Refuse to invent a street if the audio was empty.

Starter path if you are new to Twilio

Spend the first week on one number and ten test calls you place yourself. Use Twilio's $15 trial credit for the number and the minutes. Rent the $6 droplet only after a test call writes a row. Do not register 10DLC on your personal sole-proprietor brand and then text a client's drivers from it. Production texts leave from the yard's approved campaign.

Operator path once four yards are live

Keep one n8n instance and a separate Twilio subaccount per yard. Five concurrent Cloud Starter executions are enough for night overflow at this volume. Two yards calling at once is not a 20-step workflow problem. Move to the Pro plan, listed at €50 per month billed annually on n8n's pricing page, only when execution history and admin roles are the reason, not because a blog said to.

What can go wrong on a live tow call?

The expensive failure is a truck sent to the wrong pin, or a truck sent when the driver never accepted. The second failure is a recording or a text the carrier or a state will not stand behind. Design the gate so both are boring.

Recording and text rules

The FCC's consumer guide says the FCC has no rules for individuals recording telephone conversations, and that recording an intrastate wireline call can still violate state law. Federal criminal wiretap law, at 18 U.S.C. § 2511(2)(d), generally allows a person who is a party to the call, or who has prior consent from one party, to intercept that call, unless the purpose is a crime or a tort. Several states require all-party consent on top of that federal floor. Put a spoken notice in the first sentence of the script, before Gather starts, and have a local attorney in the yard's state read it. Do not copy a script from another state.

Unregistered 10DLC traffic gets filtered. Twilio's registration steps are brand, campaign, then numbers in the messaging service. Budget under a week for campaign approval and do not promise a go-live date inside that window. Sole-proprietor registration is a different product: $4 brand, $15 vetting, $2 per campaign per month, under 1,000 messages a day on T-Mobile, and it is the wrong box for a yard that has an EIN.

Calls you do not automate

• Police holds, impounds, and any caller who says someone is hurt.
• Quotes. The driver prices on scene. The desk does not.
• Card numbers. There is no payment capture in version one.
• Out-of-radius pins. Escalate even if the caller insists.
• A second truck. One on-call phone. The owner reassigns humans.

Should you build the voice layer or buy it?

Build the scripted Gather desk when you can place test calls and read a webhook log. Buy a hand-deployed phone agent when the yard wants a free-form conversation and will pay installation in the thousands, not a $697 retainer. Those are different offers. Selling the expensive one at the cheap price is how this business breaks.

Your startup cash, if you already have a computer, is about $25 before the first invoice: the $6 droplet and $19 of sole-proprietor 10DLC fees only if you must text during your own tests. The $15 Twilio trial credit covers the first local number and a stack of test minutes. The yard's production brand registration is their invoice, not yours.

Start with one yard and a driver yes

The cash-flow version of this business is four independent yards, a $697 cap, and tool bills that never touch your retainer. You earn in dollars, you do the listening from wherever you live, and you do not need a truck. The work that keeps the retainer is the morning log and the calls you refused to automate.

Living in a lower-cost city does not change the US filing. It changes how far $2,788 goes after you pay the 15.3 percent self-employment tax and your own health coverage. Quote the desk. Keep the keys in the yard's name. Roll a truck only after a human replies YES.
