Italy Nomad Visa Income Requirements
Italy's nomad visa wants about €25,500 a year from the work you will do there. Washington charges $133.60 through December 31, 2026.
- As of September 2026, consular sheets set Italy's nomad visa income test at €8,500 times 3, which is €25,500 a year from lawful sources.
- The Washington embassy packet still prints €24,789 from 2024 and says Social Security, rents, and stocks do not count toward the visa.
- Remote workers filing in Washington need gross salary of at least €33,000, plus an employer letter covering convictions in the past five years.
- The permit reads nomade digitale - lavoratore da remoto, lasts at most one year, and must be requested within eight working days of entry.
- From October 1 through December 31, 2026, the Washington embassy charges $133.60 for a national visa staying longer than 90 days.
- US citizens still file on worldwide income. The 2026 foreign earned income exclusion cap is $132,900 only if you qualify and file.
Italy asks digital nomads and remote workers for lawful yearly income of at least three times the floor used to exempt someone from sharing healthcare costs. On consular sheets updated in 2026, that floor is €8,500, so the test comes out to €25,500. The miss that wastes the appointment is a pension, a rental, or a brokerage account offered as if it were that income. The Embassy of Italy in Washington says Social Security, rents, and stocks do not count, and its packet still prints an older €24,789 figure from 2024.
If the money is passive, the elective residence visa is the file that looks at that kind of income, with a different bar. A self-employed American who does clear the work-income test still files a US return on worldwide income. The national visa fee at the Washington embassy is $133.60 from October 1 through December 31, 2026. Another self-employment permit with its own euro floor is the DAFT visa for Americans, and the paperwork is not interchangeable with Italy's.
What are Italy's digital nomad visa income rules?
Use €25,500 of lawful yearly income as the working number, then read the checklist of the consulate that actually takes your application. The April 2024 decree in the Gazzetta Ufficiale does not freeze a euro amount. It sets the income at three times the minimum level for exemption from healthcare-cost participation. The Embassy of Italy in Seoul's September 2026 sheet does the multiplication in public: €8,500 times 3 equals €25,500. The embassies in La Valletta and Pristina state the same €8,500 base.
Other offices round the same triple differently. Tunis, in a May 2026 sheet, prints approximately €27,000. Washington's February 2026 packet still shows €24,789 and dates that figure to 2024. As of October 2026, document work income of at least €25,500 and ask your consulate which number is on its live checklist.
| Source | What it prints | Who it binds in practice |
|---|---|---|
| April 2024 decree, article 3 | Three times the healthcare-exemption floor, from lawful sources | The legal test every consulate is applying |
| Seoul sheet, September 2026; also La Valletta and Pristina | €8,500 times 3, which is €25,500 | The clearest current multiplication of that floor |
| Tunis sheet, May 2026 | Approximately €27,000 | That consulate's rounded statement of the same test |
| Washington packet, February 2026 file | €24,789, dated inside the packet as 2024, and only from the work you will do in Italy | Americans applying at that embassy, until the packet is revised |
| Washington remote-worker line | Gross salary of at least €33,000 | Employees and collaborators filing at that embassy |
What Washington will accept as proof
Washington accepts pay stubs, a tax return, a W-2, or the three most recent bank statements, and the money has to come from the work you will do in Italy. Pair a bank statement with invoices or a W-2 so a brokerage transfer is not mistaken for earned income.
Data note: income figures were checked in October 2026 against the April 2024 decree and consular sheets from 2026. The healthcare floor can be reset, and each consulate prints its own checklist.
Are you a nomad or a remote worker?
The decree uses both names for one permit card. A digital nomad, in the integration ministry's description, is self-employed. A remote worker is an employee or a collaborator. Your contract decides the paper. The same note places both outside the annual flow-decree quota. A digital nomad skips the provisional nulla osta. A remote worker skips the work-authorization nulla osta. The highly skilled test stays.
The employee salary line
Remote workers add a contract or a binding offer for highly skilled work. Washington says annual gross salary on that paper must be at least €33,000, and it points at an ISTAT table so the figure can be checked. Seoul's September 2026 sheet does not print €33,000. It requires the relevant collective agreement and, in any case, at least the ISTAT average gross annual salary. Use €33,000 when Washington is your embassy, and use your own consulate's line everywhere else.
They also add a signed employer statement, with a copy of the signer's photo ID, of no convictions in the past five years for the offenses in article 22, paragraph 5-bis, of the immigration code. Washington names facilitation of illegal immigration, exploitation of minors for work, labor-law violations, and the other crimes in that paragraph. The embassy wants its own form, signed by an executive or legal representative. A freelancer skips the letter. An employer who will not sign it stops the employee path.
Say you are a self-employed product designer, a hypothetical, and last year's invoices total €40,000. That is €14,500 above the €25,500 triple-floor, and it also clears Tunis's approximate €27,000 and Washington's printed €24,789. The €33,000 line is for employees. If that €40,000 were wages, it would sit €7,000 above Washington's salary line.
On that same hypothetical, a three-year degree plus eight months of invoices covers the qualification path and the six-month rule, once the diploma is apostilled and translated. Seoul says a complete file does not guarantee the visa.
What makes the work highly skilled?
Article 27-quater of the immigration code is the qualification test the decree and the consular sheets both use. Invoices from work the consulate does not treat as highly skilled still fail the file. Seoul's September 2026 sheet and Washington's packet describe four ways through.
- A tertiary degree of at least three years, or a post-secondary qualification of at least three years or level 6 on the framework in the Ministry of Labour decree of 8 January 2018. Washington accepts a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate via CIMEA or a Declaration of Value. A non-EU diploma goes in apostilled or legalized, with a certified Italian translation. CIMEA comparability can replace the Declaration of Value.
- A regulated profession, attested by the Italian authority under Legislative Decree 206 of 6 November 2007 before you apply. Washington's examples include architects, engineers, and teachers, and some licenses have to be in hand first.
- Five years of experience comparable to a tertiary qualification and relevant to the work. A public authority in the country where you earned it must show the company and its sector, your role, the contract or at least two pay slips per year claimed, and an employer letter with the dates. A résumé does not replace that set.
- ICT managers and specialists only, ISCO-08 codes 133 and 25: three years of relevant experience in the seven years before you apply.
When five years is the only path
Without a degree, and outside those ICT codes, you are on the five-year path. Two pay slips for each year you claim is the floor in the consular text. If a former employer will not write the letter, Seoul lists a chamber of commerce, a municipality, or a social-security body in the country where you worked. Start that request while the lease is being registered.
What belongs in the appointment packet?
For a stay longer than 90 days, Washington charges the national visa fee: $133.60 from October 1 through December 31, 2026. The Schengen fee in that window is $103.70 and covers a stay of 90 days or less, which is too short if you intend to live in Italy. The fee page was updated on October 2, 2026. Pay at the window with a cashier's check or money order to "Embassy of Italy, Washington DC," or with cash in the exact amount. The dollar amount can change next quarter.
- Confirm which consulate covers your home address, and use that office's checklist when the euro figures disagree.
- Passport: Washington wants it valid at least 15 months past the travel date, with two blank pages. Seoul and Pristina describe a shorter rule, three months beyond the visa's end. Meet the office you will actually visit.
- A recent photo on a white background, about 1.2 by 1.5 inches or 3 by 4 centimeters, attached to the form. Washington rejects a scan of the photo. You appear in person. The Foreign Ministry takes fingerprints and a photo, stores them for 59 months, and exempts children under 12 from fingerprints.
- Insurance for medical care and hospital stays, valid in Italy for the whole stay. Washington also wants repatriation covered, at not less than €30,000 or $50,000, for the days you are outside the United States. That embassy calls inadequate medical coverage the number one reason for refusals, and a US insurance card by itself is not proof.
- Housing in your name for the entire visa length: a registered residential lease, the contratto di locazione ad uso abitativo, with proof the landlord filed it at the Agenzia delle Entrate, or a registered deed. Seoul accepts an ownership deed or a lease registered with the Revenue Agency.
- Six months of experience in the work you will do. Washington accepts tax returns, client invoices, or a professional-association membership for nomads, and tax returns, pay slips, or an employer letter for remote workers.
- After you land, request the permesso di soggiorno at the Questura for the province where you live, within eight working days. The Foreign Ministry gives that same eight-working-day clock for any national visa. Bring a copy of the packet you filed abroad.
How long the card lasts
Pristina's page says the visa can run up to 365 days. Article 4 then issues the permit, worded "nomade digitale - lavoratore da remoto," for no more than one year, renewable if the original conditions still hold. Washington's packet, writing as of 2024, ties renewal to continued work, lodging, and health insurance, and to the employer staying clear of those convictions. La Valletta says its own review can take up to 90 days for remote workers and 120 days for digital nomads, and that office holds the passport unless you withdraw. Ask your consulate about passport retention before you book travel. Some Questure take the first permit filing through a post office, so check the province on your lease.
Family joins after you arrive. Article 4 allows reunification for the relatives in article 29, paragraph 1, letters a and b, on a family permit that matches the worker's. Washington describes them as a spouse you are not separated from, and a child under 18, including a spouse's child if the other parent consents. That checklist, dated 2024 inside the 2026 file, says children over 18 and parents cannot be sponsored. The decree prints no separate income floor for a spouse or a child. Confirm any family figure with the Questura, and budget the principal applicant's test first.
Do you owe Italian tax and US tax?
A visa is not a tax status. The Agenzia delle Entrate page updated on 13 January 2026 treats you as tax-resident if, for most of the year, any one test is true: a habitual home, a domicile at the center of your personal and family life, physical presence counting fractions of a day, or registration in the resident register unless you prove it is not real residence. The count is 183 days, or 184 in a leap year. 2026 uses 183. A November 2024 circular says presence alone is enough, including smart-working in Italy for most of the tax year.
Once that residence starts, Italian income tax and social contributions are part of keeping the permit. Article 4 says the permit is refused or revoked when those rules are missed, so a year of ignored filings can cost the card. How much of a new resident's Italian tax base can be sheltered is the subject of the impatriate regime. This visa does not award that regime on its own.
The US return does not move
The IRS page for citizens and resident aliens abroad says the filing rules are generally the same outside the country. You are taxed on worldwide income, and the foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign tax credit exist only if you file. For tax year 2026 the exclusion cap is $132,900 per qualifying person, on the IRS page that figures the exclusion and in the IRS inflation announcement. You have to meet the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test. If you qualify for only part of the year, the cap is the maximum times your qualifying days, divided by 365, or by 366 in a leap year. A one-year permit does not, by itself, prove a full year of qualifying days.
If you live abroad on the April 15 due date, that IRS page gives an automatic extension to file until June 15, and interest still runs from April 15. Form 4868, filed before June 15, can push the filing date to October 15. Foreign accounts over the reporting threshold still go on FinCEN Form 114, generally by April 15, even with no interest.
Social contributions are a separate bill. Under the Social Security Administration's totalization pamphlet for Italy, a self-employed US national who would otherwise be covered by both systems stays in US Social Security only. An Italian national, or a dual US-Italian national, in that same spot generally chooses the country. Show the certificate of coverage if Italy asks why its contributions are not also due. The income-tax exclusion does not create that certificate. Before you sign the year lease, set the visa math next to rent and insurance on the geographic arbitrage comparisons.
What to do before you pay the fee
Spend the weeks on documents, then pay the fee. Self-employed applicants show at least €25,500 of work income plus a qualification path. Employees add the salary contract, €33,000 gross if Washington is the embassy, and the conviction letter.
- Download the checklist for the consulate that covers your address. If it still shows €24,789, assemble at least €25,500 from the work and ask whether a higher local figure applies.
- For a non-EU degree, order the apostille and the certified Italian translation, or the CIMEA certificate. With no degree, open the five-year file or confirm the ICT three-year path.
- Put a registered residential lease in your name, insurance at Washington's €30,000 or $50,000 minimum if that is your embassy, and a passport that meets that office's validity rule, into the same packet.
- After entry, file the permesso within eight working days, request the Social Security certificate if you are a self-employed US national, and file the US return. June 15 is the automatic filing date abroad. Interest on unpaid tax starts April 15.
This is general information, not legal, tax, or immigration advice. Consular euro figures, the Washington dollar fee, and the healthcare floor move. A visa officer and a tax professional who files both the Italian and the US return should confirm your file before you book the appointment or treat the exclusion as automatic.

Frequently asked questions
What income do I need for Italy's digital nomad visa?
Consular sheets updated in 2026 calculate it as €8,500 times 3, or €25,500 a year. Washington's packet still prints €24,789 from 2024 and counts only income from the work you will do in Italy.
Does Social Security count for the Italy nomad visa?
The Embassy of Italy in Washington says Social Security, rents, and stocks are not considered. The income has to come from the remote work itself.
How long is Italy's nomad residence permit?
The April 2024 decree issues it for no more than one year, worded nomade digitale - lavoratore da remoto, and you request it at the Questura within eight working days of entry. It can be renewed if the original conditions still hold.
Do Americans on Italy's nomad visa still file US taxes?
Yes. The IRS taxes citizens on worldwide income, and the 2026 foreign earned income exclusion of up to $132,900 applies only if you qualify and file a return.
