Run this checklist before filing or before leaving the United States. The goal is to separate income tax, reporting forms, state domicile, and account documentation so nothing expensive hides in the same mental bucket.

  • Federal returnDo you still file as a US citizen or resident, and what income is worldwide, foreign earned, passive, or self-employment?
  • FEIE or FTCWill the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, Foreign Tax Credit, or a mix of both produce the cleaner result?
  • Self-employment taxIf you freelance or own a service business, confirm whether US self-employment tax still applies even when income tax is reduced.
  • FBAR and FATCAList every foreign account, highest annual balance, owner, signer, and institution before checking thresholds.
  • State domicileDocument lease, driver license, voter registration, bank address, property, family ties, and return intent.
